Fortunately the Young Onset PD segment comprises only a small fraction (10-15%) of the people who will get Parkinson's disease. However, the cumulative and ripple effects of YOPD make this illness especially devastating, because- besides the personal impact on the YOPD person's career and earnings- all caregivers from young children to spouses to siblings to elderly parents also have their lives and plans disrupted.
Data from a 2003 article on incidence of PD coupled with CDC life expectancy estimates show that YOPDs carry 25% of the total burden of person-years with the disease. PD is diagnosed more frequently in the elderly, but YOPDs bear a disproportionate share of PD's consequences due to their long trajectories. [12 Apr 09] |
